Designed by Foster + Partners, the Queen Elizabeth II Great Court opened in 2000, converting the museum’s inner courtyard into a covered public square. The Reading Room was designed by Sydney Smirke, younger brother of the museum’s architect Robert Smirke, in 1854, and completed in 1857.
