SEE BACK; II-BR-6; STATE CAPITOL, on State Capitol Avenue, one block off River Road. America's tallest state capitol becomes one of the largest Christmas ornaments each year as the 30-story building is festooned with lights. The observation tower offers a dramatic view of the city and the Mississippi. Tours of the first floor (9:00-4:00 daily, free) include not only the spot where Huey Long was assassinated, but also an impressive array of murals, statuary, astounding works in bas-relief on huge bronze doors, and the spectacular Marble Hall.
