"African House" - Melrose Plantation

SEE BACK; VIII-N-6; MELROSE -- Standing on the grounds of the Melrose Plantation near Natchez, Louisiana, is the so-called "African House." This square, two-story building has a large hipped roof which gives it a hut-like appearance. The lower floor was used as a jail for slaves. The walls of the upper story are lined with colorful murals depicting plantation life seen through the eyes of the artist Clementine Hunter.; Melrose Plantation is located on La. 119, approximately 25 miles south of Natchitoches.
