Manressa Retreat House

Notes

SEE BACK; X-C-1; This Greek Revival structure on the East Bank of the Mississippi was established in 1831 as a state-supported college for men. When it closed a few years later, it was purchased by Valcour Aime, a wealthy West Bank planter who reopened it as Louisiana College. It was used as a barrack for Union forces during the war between the States, Aime gave it to the Marist Fathers in 1864, who operated it as a bording school for boys. It now belongs to the Jesuit Order, and is known as Manressa Retreat House. The building is private but the grounds are open to the public.; Louisiana Office of Tourism
