Constantine I built a funerary hall in the 4th century over tomb of Saint Lawrence; Pope Sixtus III built a church that was later remodeled into the current nave (432-440 CE); Pope Pelagius II (579-90) a Byzantine Church and eventually Pope Honorius III (1216-27) the Romanesque structure that we see today.
