Notes: BERKELEY California; General Plan of the University of California (Phoebe Apperson Hearst; Plan) c. 1901 (This shows revision of 1914); John Galen Howard (1864-1931) and H.-J. -Emile BĂ©nard (1844- ); W. Hegemann Collection, Gift of RC Weinberg and GR Collins 1973 (OVER); This Beaux Arts campus plan was the outcome of two international competitions. In the first, judged in Antwerp in 1898, 105 plans were submitted. The eleven premiated architects entered a second competition judged at San Francisco in 1899. Five prizes, ranging from one to five thousand were awarded; the first prize went to Emile Benard of Paris.
