      Notes
Bakong is considered to be the first Khmer 'mountain' temple built mainly of stone, serving as the model for later Angkor temples. Decoration on the sanctuary towers is in brick with a heavy coating of stucco. Only the base of the original Central Sanctuary remains. The rest was reconstructed at a later date, perhaps in the 12th century.
