Mosque construction began in 1463 and was completed in 1470. This was overseen by Greek architect Atik Sinan. The mosque was then destroyed in 1766 (most likely by an earthquake) and was rebuilt under the patronage of Sultan Mustafa III. The architect commissioned by Mustafa III was Mehmet Tahir Aga. This second mosque was completed in 1771.
