Basilica di San Nicola in Carcere

Date
16th century
Work Type

First firm date of dedication is 1128 although first church probably dates back to 6th century CE. Built on the site of three Roman temples in the Forum Holitorium, the columns of which are seen incorporated into the current building. In the crypt, the foundations for Temple of Janus (vowed by Gaius Duilius) can be seen. Giacomo della Porta remodelled the facade in 1599.
